I can’t say for sure the longest I’ve ever gone without reading a book. I know that–for a very long time–after I started my first full-time job I couldn’t sit and read. It was probably for a few months. My eyes were strained from staring at a computer day in and day out. On break and at lunch, when I usually liked to sit and read previously, I went walking. I just needed my eyes not to focus on words or a screen.
I did listen to audio books. Not the same thing, but it sufficed. I still got my story, and I didn’t have the issues of eye pain that came along with it.
But, as always, the book I love to read when I haven’t curled up with a book in a long time is The Little Prince. I feel like a broken record at times saying how much I love this story, how much it means to me, but it’s so very true. I don’t know that there ever will be a book that touches me the way this one does. And, in case you missed it, you can check out this post to see the tattoos I have from the book. Although, sometimes I have a hard time picking up another book after I finish that one. Even though I know what happens, it still shatters my heart every time.
This weekend I started to reread The Catcher in the Rye for the first time in… I guess I have to admit, I think it’s been nearly 10 years since I last hung out with Holden. It’s been on my mind ever since I wrote the post Revisiting Holden for a different Daily Post. I forgot how much I love Caulfield. I was concerned because it’s been so long since I read the book that, what if I grew and changed, and he no longer touched my heart? But–so far, so good. I’m only 60 pages in, but I love him as much as ever. Maybe even more. I laugh harder than I ever remember at his sarcasm.
Which is my plan for the day. Fighting off bronchitis and sinusitis with the help of Biaxin and Mucinex gives great reason to do little else but sit on the couch and read or watch sports. Nap, too. I think that it is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It’s nice to know I’ve got a spitfire waiting for me when I pick the book up again.
I don’t remember reading either The Little Prince or Catcher in the Rye, although I probably did before the MVA that scrambled my brains back in the 90s. I will have to put them both on my list of books to read. Thanks. 🙂
I hope you do read them! Little Prince is only about 90 pages and it is illustrated so it won’t take very long 🙂
Hi, dear. Eat raw onion and you’ll shine in all your might. It’s the best way to fight bronchitis, sinusitis and bad guys too.
Raw onion? Oh boy, I’ll be in tears in no time. Thank you, I will try it because I am desperate 🙂
I’d love extra time to read for pleasure, never mind write, these days (too much paper grading and planning to do). Anyway, you’ve been nominated for a “lovely blog” award. See here: http://thisonpurpose.wordpress.com/2014/10/28/aw-shucks/
Oh how wonderful, thank you so much! 🙂
But of course! 🙂
