Too much caffeine + cancelled plans = Steampunk craft day

For the second week in a row, my Saturday night plans have fallen through. Is it disappointing? Yeah, a little. But I can be an introvert, so it isn’t a horrible thing to be on my own. As I said in my last post, I am good at entertaining myself.

I found out yesterday that I’d wind up being free tonight. It isn’t the worst thing to find out on Friday payday. So I spent Friday night (pre-Bears/Seahawks game) at my favorite places: the craft stores!

A couple weeks ago I went to the Bristol Renaissance Faire and fell in love with a few Steampunk jewelry pieces while there. I’ve been looking for a new craft project during the (now sweltering) August. My preferred hobby of choice is cake decorating; however, it is too humid to hang out in the kitchen. Plus fondant sweats and becomes sticky and too difficult to work with.

I think I spent four hours between three craft stores browsing for Steampunk items. I bought a bunch of keys, gears, gems, dragonflies, butterflies, and anything that was sort of brass/antique looking. I figured I could just glue a collage of items together and stick them to barrettes, or add a little ring to make a pendant on others. I found I could purchase ribbon-type necklaces to avoid beading. I think my hands would shake too much with the large Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee I purchased to slurp on while wandering the stores. When I felt like I was starting to go overboard buying trinkets I headed home. I have not totaled the amount of money I spent between each store. But I must say I am pleased with my first foray into jewelry making. I have done two hair barrettes and one necklace.

This is my first, second, and third piece, all in order I made them:

Now if I could only figure out how to not have my fingers become coated with Super Glue while making these… that would be awesome 🙂
